The story of Andy Warhol and Jack Nicklaus is one of our favorites. Andy Warhol wanted to paint Jack Nicklaus as part of his now-iconic "Athlete Series", so Warhol traveled to Columbus, OH. Nicklaus reportedly did not want this painter that he did not know to come to his house, so they made arrangements to meet instead at a Columbus area hotel. In Warhol's diary that was discovered after his death, Warhol himself described that day's interaction as "strained." Jack Nicklaus apparently did not know who Warhol was, as this was 1977. Warhol was famous, but this was before Warhol became a household name in the 1980s. Warhol showed up to the meeting to "paint" Jack Nicklaus without a paintbrush or canvas - but instead a Polaroid camera. He then snapped pictures of Nicklaus while instructing Jack to pose with his "stick," which Nicklaus had to correct "it's not a stick, it's a club." At one point Nicklaus turned to Richard Weisman, who commissioned the Athlete Series from Warhol, and remarked "Is this guy for real?"
