Offered here is a circa 1865 McEwan long nose play club. This club has a thick broad horn with 5 pegs, leather face insert, and original finish. The lead on the back side is a bit thick.

"As Hugh Philp was to St. Andrews, so was the firm of McEwan & Son to Edinburgh and Musselburgh." (Golf 25, Sept. 1895, p51). Indeed, the McEwan family of clubmakers were central to the world of clubmaking from 1770, when James McEwan opened for business, to the end of the nineteenth century, when long nose clubs were rendered obsolete. Across that 120 year span, five generations of the McEwan family were producing long nose clubs of the highest quality. TCA2 V1 p43-48

The head has a leather insert held in place by eight small nails beautifully installed by the clubmaker along with an extra wide and thick horn attached with five wooden pegs. The insert an wide horn were installed to repair the head, and the work is beautiful. Such repairs were normal during the long nose era, and were part of the skill set found in a skilled clubmaker.

The lead backweight is exceptionally long, the name stamp is strong, and the original finish is rich. Original 43 1/4" shaft with original sheepskin grip.  Grip has some minor insect damage in just a few places. Head measures 6" long, 2 3/16" in width, and a face depth of just a touch over 1".

This is a great club!
