Dating from the late 1920s or early 1930s, Stewart’s backwards putter was made expressly for William “Willie” Kidd Sr. and modeled after a prototype created by Kidd, the professional at the Interlachen Country Club, in Edina, Minnesota, from 1920 to 1957. When discussing and providing me with the above information, William “Bill" Kidd Jr. noted that his father would travel to Scotland every two or three years, purchase whatever chubheads he desired from Stewart, and then shaft and sell these clubs to the members at Interlachen upon his return.

There is no question that the William Kidd backwards putter offered here was originally made as a backwards putter. The unique blade shape and marks on the back of the head match the other known examples of which there are very few.  However, it has a discreet, beautifully executed weld between the back of the blade and the base of the hosel, to possibly expand and reinforce the hosel to the back of the blade. The weld appears to have been made to position the blade ahead of the hosel, not to repair any damage.

Hosel and blade connection appears to have been repared with a very descreet weld not visible to the naked eye. 35" putter length. Grip is old leather wrap, possibly an old replacement.

The original shaft measures 35" and it has an old leather-wrapped grip, possibly a replacment. Stewart's backwards putters are extremely few and far between, and this one presents exceedingly well.
