Both woods in this lot are the actual clubs shown and described in The Clubmakers Art Volume 1 page 168. The were devised and patented by Isaac Mackie here in the Us in 1924.

Isaac S. Mackie sought to overcome the perceived weaknesses of both socket and splice neck woods by combining a socket and splice neck into a two-piece shaft.

As designed by Mackie, these woods are each made from three separate pieces: the head and a two-piece shaft. The two-piece shaft consists of a full-length piece and an intermediate piece. The full-length piece splices onto the back of both the neck and the upper part of the intermediate piece. The lower part of the intermediate piece sockets into the neck.

The blond driver marked “J.B. Mackie” on its head (Jack Mackie was Isaac's brother) lacks the original whipping that once covered the neck joint. Consequently, the entire splice between the intermediate piece and the shaft is visible, as is the area where the intermediate piece sockets into the head. The tip of the intermediate piece is visible on the sole.

Originally, Mackie’s club, complete with its two-piece shaft, was offered as “Mackie’s Fishing Rod Splice” made by I.S. Mackie of Stapleton, New York. Spalding offered these clubs in 1922,1923, and 1924.

As made by Spalding, Mackie's woods were wrapped with whipping around four areas of the splice. The dark head Spalding driver with the black fiber soleplate,  offered as part of this lot, lacks the segment of whipping that originally covered the top of the neck where the intermediate shaft piece sockets into the head. This is why the wood around the driver's socket joint is much lighter in color.

The AG Spaulding is 43 1/2" in length, the Mackie Driver is 43". Both have their original grips.
