Offered here is perhaps one of the first MacGregor Toney Penna VIP custom iron sets, likely made in 1959. Bill "Vog" Vogeney is our Scotty Cameron expert, but we were amazed to find out he collects these custom Penna VIPs as well. "For as long as I have been collecting clubs (40 years) the Penna TP63 VIP irons have been the most desired iron set among collectors. For decades I did not realize there were other variations of the Penna VIP. In the last 10 years I have been buying virtually every set I can find. I've been told these were made in 1959, and based on the shafts and grips I have on my set (I have seen 3 sets like these in the last decade) I would have to believe that. Penna VIPs were made only from approximately 1959 to 1967, and most of the sets have the year stamped in them. It's thought probably 100-200 sets were made each year, at most. Each set was custom made, with options for the face (plain or fancy), grind, neck design, etc. These most resemble the legendary TP63's with the copper and dot punch face and have an unusual feature not often seen on custom MacGregors-a little gooseneck or notch in the topline at the hosel!"
These appear to have the original shafts and ferrules, no neck numbers or shaft bands, with 1980's era leather wrap grips, the 2 iron is 39", in excellent condition. 2-9 plus Penna VIP wedge with the same face style.
