This circa 1900 driver is marked "Harry Vardon, Special" on the crown. Vardon, of course, was the greatest golfer of his generation. At the same time, his brother Tom excelled as a clubmaker. According to Pete Georgiady in his book compendium of British Clubmakers, Tom hired John Tickle, another fine clubmaker who, beginning in 1897, made all of Harry Vardon's special clubs while he worked in Tom Vardon's clubmaking shop. Tickle left Tom's employ in 1901 when he became the pro at Maidstone.
This solid driver has its 41" original shaft, socket head, and original sheepskin grip. It should be noted that Vardon himself was known to use a shorter than standard driver.
