Original 1869 Newspaper With Detailed
Account
of Young Tom and Old Tom Morris Match
Sure, we're all heard of the accounts of matches involving Young Tom
Morris and Old Tom Morris, but here is the truly rare chance to obtain an actual
newspaper account of one of those epic duels from the very beginning of
professional golf. Presented here is an original copy of The Scotsman
newspaper from October 18, 1869. This newspaper from over 141 years ago reports
on a match where Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris teamed up against Davie Strath and
David Anderson. Incredibly, Young Tom Morris was only 18 years old and was the
2-time defending Open Champion at the time this match took place (he would win
the following 2 Opens as well). This historic newspaper account of that match goes on to say
that the match occurred with a "considerable amount of betting". As if this
piece could get any better, the famous Morris duo won the 3 match set!
This original 1869 newspaper is in remarkable condition. Our research has not
concluded whether this match involving Young and Old Tom Morris is previously
known to historians, as it is omitted from Kevin Cook's well-researched book on
the Morris golfers, Tommy's Honor, which details dozens of other matches
involving the Morrises.
