Original 1869 Newspaper With Detailed Account

Old Tom Morris Match

Sure, we're all heard of the accounts of matches involving Old Tom Morris, but here presented here is an original The Scotsman newspaper from November 30, 1869. This newspaper from over 141 years ago reports on a match where Old Tom Morris played 3 matches against Bob Furgeson of Musselburgh and was swept by Furgeson 3-0!! "The play on both days was admirable in the part of both players. Morris proved equal to his youthful rival at the commencement of each game, but the length of play told against him." This account of Bob Furgeson being Morris' "youthful rival" is true, as Furgeson was only 21 years of age in 1869. While it may have seemed remarkable that the 4-time Open Champion would lose to such a young rival, this loss appears much clearer in hindsight; Bob Ferguson went on to win 3 Open Championships of his own from 1880-1882. A truly remarkable original account of Old Tom Morris in his playing days. This vintage newspaper remains in excellent condition.
