1935 Masters Program
Prior
to the 1990's, programs were produced for only the 1934 and 1935
Masters (then officially called the Augusta National Invitation
Tournament). The programs from those first two tournaments have
gained a legendary status among Masters Collectors, and are
among the rarest and most desired of all Masters Memorabilia. Interestingly, the 1935
Masters Tournament Program is even more scarce than the program from the
inaugural Masters. While approximately two dozen or more authentic 1934
Masters Programs are known, it has been widely reported that only a
half dozen authentic 1935 Masters Programs are known to exist. Even
allowing for the fact that a few newly-discovered 1935 Masters Programs
may turn up, the extreme scarcity of this program from Gene Sarazen's
famous Double Eagle tournament is without question.
We
offered this program once before, when it brought only $8,305 in our
Summer 2013 Auction. We believe that’s actually the lowest price an
authentic 1935 Masters Program has ever sold for, as the going rate is
currently $12,000+. When we first offered this program, it came directly
from a gentleman in Augusta whose family has owned this Program since
1935. So this 80 year old program has only had 2 owners.
Condition:
Despite the appearance of scrapes and dings on the cover, as can easily
be seen in the photos, this program is actually in very good condition.
The red cover of the 1935 Masters Program was very prone to scuffs and
scratches, thus condition issues abound with all known surviving
examples of this program. Overall, an excellent example of this scarce
program.
