Frank Souchak's
1962 US Open Contestant Badge
Frank Souchak was a Professional Football Player and accomplished amateur golfer. His most noted golf accomplishment was opening with a 70 in the first round of the 1953 U.S. Open at Oakmont, ultimately finishing as low amateur in 9th place, 13 shots behind runaway winner Ben Hogan.
Presented here is an item from another National Golf Championship in which Souchak competed, his 1962 U.S. Open Contestant Badge. The ’62 Open was also contested at Oakmont, where Souchak was a member. Contestant's Badges from Major Championships have long been sought after by collectors and this one should be no exception. The outcome of the tournament could not have been more dramatic, as a young Jack Nicklaus defeated The King – Arnold Palmer in an 18-hole playoff, which would establish one of golf’s greatest rivalries for years to come.
