Offered here is a historically significant 1890 bronze statue of Champion golfer and celebrated author Horace Hutchinson. This unusually large bronze statue was produced by William Tyler in 1890 of Hutchinson, who won the British Amateur in 1886 and 1887. Not only is it likely the largest early golf bronze ever made, but many believe it to be the first bronze ever produced of a "golfing celebrity." This Horace Hutchinson bronze pre-dates two other famous statues from the era - the circa 1895 red jacket Johnny Laidlay statue, and the 1895 sterling silver John Ball statue (offered elsewhere in this auction).
This 1890 Horace Hutchinson bronze statue stands 25" tall and tilts the scales at a whopping 75 pounds. Signed by William Tyler on the base, and also dated "1890."
This piece is being offered today from the famed Ronnie Watts Collection
