During the 1902 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool at Hoylake, his Imperial Highness (HIH) Grand Duke Michael of Russia (who was President and founder of the Cannes Golf Club in France) asked Liverpool member Sir Arthur Henry Crosfield to put together a team of golfers from Hoylake to play against a team representing Cannes Golf Club in 1903.
The Grand Duke then commissioned Mappin & Webb to create the trophy. The 1903 competition ended in a tie. The following year Crosfield's Hoylake team was victorious and received the offered trophy. This trophy, presented to Crosfield's Hoylake team, commemorates both the 1903 and 1904 competitions. All 8 of the team members from both years are engraved on the trophy.
These team members include the legendary John Ball and Harold Hilton, as well as John (Jack) Graham and two-time US Amateur Champ HJ Whigham.
