Offered here is a circa 1895 Spinks Patent brass banded socket head wood. Spinks' design for attaching the shaft to the clubhead was intended as an improvement. His method did not require whipping, and he socketed the shaft deeply into the head and bound the junction with a brass ring, through which he hammered a rivet. According to Jeff Ellis, "this is the only known example of this club." Overall very good condition.
This club originates from the famed Jeff Ellis Collection, and was featured in his books, The Clubmaker's Art (TCA 1, p. 135; TCA 2, p. 157). This club has not reached the collector market since its sale at the 2007 Sotheby's auction of the Jeff Ellis Collection.
