In the 1860s-1870s, David ("Davie") Strath was Young Tom Morris' best friend and golfing companion. He was also Young Tom's chief rival on the golf course. Like Tommy's, Strath's career was a short but glorious one. Though he never won the Open Championship, he finished in the Top 5 in 7 of the 8 Opens he playing in - finishing 2nd twice. Unfortunately, in his late 20s, Strath developed tuberculosis and died in January 1879.
Offered here is a rare original 1868 invoice/receipt from Davie Strath to the City of St Andrews. The receipt is for labor performed by the ~19 year old Davie Strath on the town's behalf. It pre-dates Strath's 1st appearance in the Open Championship a year later. Most importantly, according to Tom Morris biographer and historian Peter Crabtree, this is the only known autograph of Davie Strath. 6 1/2" x 8 1/8".
This Davie Strath signed document was previously owned by Tom Morris biographer Peter Crabtree, and was part of his legendary collection.
