A stunning find! Offered here is an extraordinary huge early 1900s plaster hand-painted display for Sportsman Knitwear. This massive piece would have been produced for a store window display advertising the clothing company Sportsman Knitwear. This may have been the only one produced, or if others were made, this is likely the only surviving example. It depicts two exquisitely dressed golfers, presumably wearing Sportsman Knitwear sweaters and knickerbocker pants. Incredible detail on the stylish golfers including socks that match their sweaters.
Our consignor found this piece in Cambridge, England decades ago. It is featured on page 133 of the 1989 book Golf: The Golden Years by Sarah Baddiel. The winning bidder will receive a copy of this book!
It is difficult to explain how impressive this piece is without seeing it in person. I can't remember the last time a piece elicited such a strong reaction when it arrived at our office. It is a sight to behold!
Hand-painted plaster. 24" high x 22" wide. Still contains the original manufacturer's stickers on the base from Loughborough, UK.
**To show the extreme scale of this piece, in the 2nd photo we have photographed it next to the famous Scotty Dog! Scotty Dog not included in this auction.
