Johnny Laidlay Handwritten Letter from 1936
In this auction, we are proud to offer two different autographs of 1889 and 1891
British Amateur Champion Johnny Laidlay. He also invented the overlap grip that over 90% of golfers
reportedly use today, though the grip is often incorrectly credited to Harry Vardon. In the 2006 GilChrist's Guide to Golf Collectibles, an autograph
of Laidlay, who died in 1940, is listed at $1,500. This is not just a cut
signature of Laidlay, but is a full letter written and signed by the great
champion.
