Vintage 1975 Green Jacket

The Green Jacket

There is simply nothing more iconic in modern golf than a Green Jacket. This is an original Augusta National member's Green Jacket from 1975. The owner's name, a longtime Augusta National member, is brilliantly stitched on the inside of this Green Jacket. This jacket was made by the Hamilton Tailoring Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, which has been the primary, but not exclusive, producer of Green Jackets.

The History

To simply state that authentic Green Jackets are extremely rare would be a vast understatement, as only a handful have ever been sold publicly. Even casual golf fans have heard about Augusta National Golf Club's extreme protection over the Green Jackets given to their members and Champions. Much of this information, however, is more myth than reality. It is true that Augusta National Golf Club is currently relatively protective over the Green Jackets, but this was not always the case. In the past, many members and past Champions have owned multiple Green Jackets and would often keep their jacket at home, not at Augusta National Golf Club,  Also Sam Snead admittedly owned several Green Jackets over the years, and even reportedly "lost" one, much to the chagrin of Clifford Roberts. Additionally, many members and Masters Champions have ordered replacement jackets over the years, including known examples like Billy Casper, Byron Nelson and Fuzzy Zoeller, not to mention numerous Augusta National members.

For these reasons, Green Jackets are at the same time very rare, yet occasionally obtainable. And here at Green Jacket Auctions, we have spent hundred of hours over the last several years tracking down and cataloging every known Green Jacket. Our intense research has resulted in determining the whereabouts of almost all Green Jackets known to exist in private collections.

Conclusion

Surely no item better signifies Major Championship golf than a Green Jacket. Whether this Green Jacket ends up in a museum, on display at a country club, or in the winning bidder's closet, it will surely be the centerpiece of any golf collection.
